98 km, 2280 m vertical
Assemble at 08:45 for departure at 09:00.
The climb starts immediately today as we begin cycling by the easy side of the col des Aravis (1487 m), which we cross after 8 km and just over 400 m of climbing. There follows a long, exhilarating descent on the bike to Flumet, where we turn left and head towards Megève, which we reach after 30 km. We then pass by the pretty village of Cordon and the Balcons du Mont Blanc, which offers a superb view on the snow-capped peaks of Western Europe’s highest mountain.
Next is a steep descent to Sallanches followed by a much more gentle descent to Cluses (63 km), where the serious work begins. The col de la Colombière (1618 m) is 25 km and 1100 m higher up. After a well-earned café stop on the summit there remains 18 km cycling to return to the hotel, mostly downhill, but be wary of the last 5 km!
Back at the hotel between 1 pm and 2.30, for a late lunch.
Col de Romme (103 km, 2530 m vertical). Strong riders can add the difficult col de Romme (1297 m) to the ascension of the Colombière. This adds “only” an extra 5 km and 250 m vertical but is much tougher than it sounds!
See Wednesday’s programme.
